Philippines to Build Climate-Resilient Housing Units by 2027

MANILA, Philippines — Housing units that will be built by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) in 2027 will be climate-resilient, according to Iloilo City Rep. Jam Baronda on Wednesday. During the deliberations of Baronda’s sponsorship of the proposed budget of the DHSUD for next year, 4K Party-list Rep. Iris Montes asked about the agency’s plans for climate-resilient housing. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen defenses against the increasing frequency of natural disasters such as typhoons and floods in the Philippines in recent years. The country is one of those highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, making infrastructure resilience a pressing issue. Baronda mentioned the plan during the deliberations on the proposed budget of the DHSUD for next year. Specifics regarding construction sites, scale, and technical details are expected to be finalized moving forward. As urban areas in the Philippines become more congested, a significant population resides in vulnerable areas.
