Sumatra Disaster Recovery: Over 90% of Affected Schools Resume Classes Amidst Lingering Challenges

Rehabilitation efforts for educational facilities are accelerating in the aftermath of a major disaster on Sumatra island, with over 90% of affected schools having resumed classes. As of September 22, 2026, 4,922 out of 4,922 schools impacted by the disaster have restarted learning activities. However, some schools are still utilizing temporary classrooms or other buildings, indicating that regional challenges persist in achieving full recovery. Muhammad Tito Karnavian, the Minister of Home Affairs and Head of the Task Force for Accelerated Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (Satgas PRR) of Sumatra Disasters, reviewed the progress in a ministerial coordination meeting in Jakarta. He acknowledged the resumption of classes as a significant achievement in educational recovery but pointed to factors such as differing geographical conditions, damaged access routes, material availability, and subsequent disasters as influences on the pace of recovery. Minister Tito emphasized that due to the massive number of affected schools, the rehabilitation process will take time. He called for intensive support, particularly for schools with less than 50 percent physical progress. He also highlighted the need for relocation for 97 schools and urged local governments to expedite land acquisition. According to Abdul Mu'ti, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (for Primary and Secondary Education), some of the 99 schools using temporary classrooms are employing tents to supplement the shortage. He stated that the recovery focuses not only on rebuilding school facilities but also on ensuring students' right to education. Approximately Rp5.6 trillion has been allocated for educational recovery in the affected provinces. This budget covers school facility revitalization, provision of learning materials and equipment, construction of temporary classrooms, psychosocial support, disaster preparedness, and assistance for affected students and educators.
