Chiang Rai Hosts Northern Fruit Connect 2026 Expo to Boost Local Farmers

CHIANG RAI – The "Northern Fruit Connect 2026" expo, a significant event designed to connect local farmers with global buyers, officially opened on July 27, 2026, at Lan Mueang Market in Chiang Rai. Organized by Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture, the expo aims to boost crop sales and elevate farming standards for farmers in eight northern provinces. Thailand's northern region is renowned for its unique climate, which yields fruits with distinct and delicious flavors. However, many local growers face challenges in accessing larger, more profitable markets and adding value to their raw produce. The government is implementing this initiative to address these issues through enhanced networking and support. The expo emphasizes the adoption of high-quality farming standards across the board, crucial for making Thai fruits safer and more appealing to international buyers. The initiative encompasses eight provinces, including Chiang Mai, Nan, and Mae Hong Son, with the overarching goal of establishing a robust regional supply chain. Special business matching sessions are featured at the event, facilitating direct sales from farmers to large export companies. This approach aligns with the government's market-led policy, focusing on producing what buyers demand to ensure steady income for farmers and strengthen the local economy. A key focus is increasing foreign exports, particularly to Japan, which has a demand for approximately 20,000 tons of bananas, while Thailand currently exports only about 3,000 tons. The ministry is actively working to bridge this gap by training farmers to meet stringent quality rules required for the Japanese market. Government officials toured the expo, praising the unique flavors of northern longan and durian. The fruit expo runs until July 30, 2026, offering visitors the chance to purchase fresh fruits directly from local growers, alongside daily stage shows and activities.
