Cambodia's Information Minister Warns Journalists Against Over-reliance on AI for News Writing

Cambodia's Minister of Information, Net Pheaktra, has urged journalists to exercise caution regarding the over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) for news article creation. Speaking at a training workshop on enhancing journalists' capabilities on July 31, the minister stated, "AI is not the responsible party for news articles; journalists themselves are responsible." He emphasized that the ultimate responsibility for AI-generated content lies with the journalists. Minister Pheaktra pointed out that while AI can potentially enhance efficiency and speed up journalists' work, it cannot replace human thought, analysis, source verification, professional judgment, and ethical standards. Therefore, he stressed the need for journalists to strengthen their writing skills to produce high-quality reports that are accurate and credible, thereby attracting readers and adhering to professional ethics and fundamental principles. The minister also expressed the Ministry of Information's support for journalists in enhancing their capabilities and modernizing themselves to keep pace with technological and societal advancements. He expressed hope that this training would equip journalists with more knowledge, viewing investment in human capital as foundational for building a high-quality, professional, and trustworthy media system in Cambodia, capable of competing in the digital and AI eras. He further added that investing in journalists is an investment in the quality of information and public trust for the future, as journalists are the core force in connecting the government and the people.
