Vietnam narrowly misses historic IMO triumph, clinches 6th place

Vietnam's national team narrowly missed its best-ever performance at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Shanghai, China, finishing in sixth place. The team secured 168 points, falling just one point shy of Singapore's 169 points, which placed them in fifth position. China dominated the competition, earning a total of 232 points and achieving a remarkable feat by having all six of its members win gold medals. The United States secured second place with 207 points, followed by Russia in third with 196 points, marking Russia's return to the podium after a multi-year absence. Individually, Alex Chui, a UK representative who was born in China, achieved a historic milestone by winning his fifth gold medal, and the second person ever to do so. He accomplished this with a perfect score of 42 out of 42 points. Chui is also the first and only competitor in IMO history to have won seven medals. He attributed his success to his teachers' exploration of advanced topics and the confidence built for the global stage.
