Ho Chi Minh City Gateway Tunnel Flooded, Cars Stall

A significant flood occurred in a key tunnel on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, specifically on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, following recent heavy rainfall. The water level rose to approximately 50cm, rendering many vehicles inoperable and causing the tunnel to be temporarily filled with stalled cars. This incident resulted in widespread traffic congestion in the surrounding areas, severely disrupting commutes and travel for residents. Some drivers faced vehicle breakdowns within the tunnel, requiring rescue. This tunnel serves as a crucial artery connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the nearby Long Thanh region and experiences high traffic volume. The current flooding incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure in Vietnam, which is undergoing rapid urban development, particularly the inadequacy of drainage systems. Vietnam has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, leading to significant population concentration in urban areas and increased transportation demand. However, infrastructure development, especially drainage systems and flood control measures, has not kept pace in many regions. This incident suggests the need for more resilient infrastructure development, considering future risks from heavy rainfall due to climate change. Authorities are currently working on restoring the flooded section and have implemented traffic restrictions to manage the situation. However, fundamental solutions, such as strengthening the drainage system and revising long-term urban planning, are likely to be required.
