Phnom Penh Strengthens Flood Preparedness, Urges Resident Vigilance

Phnom Penh is strengthening its flood preparedness measures in response to recent heavy rainfall and rising river levels, urging residents to remain vigilant. According to state media AKP, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and the National Committee for Disaster Management have warned of increased rainfall this year, leading to higher river levels that could cause floods impacting infrastructure, property, and lives. Phnom Penh, situated along the confluence of the Tonle Sap and the Prek Tnout rivers, experiences annual flooding in several areas. In light of this, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has established a working mechanism for disaster prevention, emergency response, and post-flood recovery. This includes reinforcing the operational procedures of the municipal and district disaster management committees and preparing an emergency response plan for the capital. Local authorities and relevant departments have been instructed to prepare for the early rescue of residents in vulnerable areas. The city aims to ensure timely response to flood disasters, provide relief to affected citizens, improve living standards, protect property, and maintain public safety and order, in line with the recommendations from Prime Minister Hun Manet during the cabinet meeting on August 28, 2026. Residents living along the Tonle Sap and Prek Tnout rivers are advised to: * Closely monitor weather conditions and water levels. * Prepare and organize belongings, livestock, and essential items for timely evacuation to designated safe shelters provided by authorities. * Maintain hygiene and sanitation to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and protect against insect bites. * Register for the emergency notification system '1294' to receive timely disaster alerts.
