Philippine Mango Industry Reorganized, Mitsui Tapped to Boost Exports
The Philippine Department of Agriculture has consolidated 40 mango growers' associations to enhance export capacity and partnered with Japan's Mitsui & Co. to expand international market reach. Efforts are also underway to address disease concerns and strengthen plant health.
THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Monday that it consolidated 40 mango growers’ associations to maximize their capacity to fulfill export orders, while enlisting Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. to support the industry’s development and help it expand in international markets. The DA added that the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) is also working to address disease concerns affecting mango production and strengthening plant health measures needed to meet the requirements of export markets. The BPI was the signatory to an agreement with Mitsui & Co. to leverage its global trading network. The DA announced its plans to develop the mango industry after dispatching a new commercial shipment of fresh Carabao mangoes to Vancouver, consisting of 250 cartons weighing 1 metric ton. It was shipped via the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sept. 18 on Air Canada. The mangoes were imported by Vancouver distributor Fresh Makers Ltd., a partner to Mensch FilAm Corp. and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Export Marketing Bureau. The DA first probed the Canadian market with a commercial shipment in June. Mangoes were also dispatched to Italy in commercial quantities last year. — Marron Joshua F. Mendoza
