Thailand to Cut Household Electricity Costs from August, Remove Public Charges

The Thai government is set to reduce household electricity costs by introducing a new residential tariff structure, effective from August 2026. Under the new plan, the rate for the first 200 units of electricity consumed will be 3 baht per unit, and a portion of public electricity charges will be removed from bills. Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee chaired a meeting with executives from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to review preparations for the implementation of this measure, which was approved by the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC) as part of the 2026–2030 electricity tariff reform plan. The new rates will apply to electricity consumed from August 2026 and will be reflected on bills issued from September 14. The government stated that eliminating public electricity charges from electricity bills will further reduce costs by approximately 9 satang per unit. The initiative also includes plans to expand eligibility for residential electricity tariffs to encompass rental homes, dormitories, apartments, individuals with temporary household registration, and vulnerable groups, thereby extending the benefits of household electricity rates to a wider population. MEA Governor Dichawat Chan-i confirmed that the authority has finalized its preparations, including operational systems, personnel, billing calculations, and customer service channels, to support the new tariff structure. MEA also affirmed its commitment to continuing the promotion of its MEA Solar One Stop Service for customers interested in rooftop solar system installations, alongside ongoing efforts to enhance electricity services for both households and businesses.
