Cambodia Urges Vigilance Amidst Heavy Rains and Flooding

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused flash floods in several areas of Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province. In response, Ms. Chamroeun Dane, Governor of Phnom Srok District, has urged all citizens to increase their vigilance and regularly monitor weather conditions, with a particular focus on the safety of young children to avoid potential risks from the floods. The appeal was made during an inspection led by the district governor, accompanied by the chief monk of Suvannaram Tuol Tani Pagoda, local officials, and law enforcement, to assess the impact of flash floods in Nam Tao and Poey Char communes on September 23. Ms. Chamroeun Dane stated that amidst continuous heavy rainfall, residents must stay alert, follow weather updates, and heed advisories from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to prepare for timely self-protection, family safety, and property preservation. She emphasized the need for special attention to young children, advising parents and guardians to closely supervise them and prevent them from playing in or entering flooded areas, especially those with strong currents or unknown depths. Furthermore, she recommended that citizens maintain their health, hygiene, and living environment during the flood period and prepare necessary supplies and important documents in case of evacuation from affected areas. Ms. Chamroeun Dane confirmed that local authorities at all levels must continuously monitor water levels in their respective areas to assess risks and implement timely rescue measures for residents in severely flooded zones, relocating them to safe high grounds. The district administration has finalized preparations, including safe evacuation sites, to be utilized should floodwaters rise and cause severe impact, prioritizing the safety and lives of the citizens. During the inspection, the district governor also presented donations from H.E. Ouk Ratry, Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, and his wife, to 10 families affected by the floods and to individuals with disabilities, aiming to alleviate their difficulties and offer moral support. This proactive approach by the Phnom Srok district authorities, in inspecting the situation and preparing safe havens, demonstrates a commitment to disaster prevention and response, prioritizing citizen safety amidst changing weather patterns and persistent rainfall.
