Vietnam's Rice Exports: Challenges and Strategies to Meet 2026 Target
Vietnam aims to export 7.7 million tons of rice in 2026, facing challenges from climate change, supply constraints, and geopolitical risks. Enhancing quality, branding, and green production are crucial for competitiveness.
Vietnam faces the challenge of maintaining its rice export target of approximately 7.7 million tons annually by 2026, requiring a strategic approach amidst increasing global market uncertainties. The global rice market is anticipated to experience significant fluctuations towards the end of 2026, influenced by factors such as weather unpredictability due to climate change, supply volume variations, and geopolitical tensions. Under these circumstances, it is crucial for Vietnam to accurately capture the rising import demand to sustain its targeted export volume. Concurrently, to enhance the international competitiveness of Vietnamese rice, there is an urgent need to improve quality, strengthen brand value, and adapt to sustainable green production practices. In particular, production methods that reduce environmental impact and high-quality rice with ensured traceability will meet the growing environmental awareness among global consumers and are expected to lead to an increase in export prices. The Vietnamese government aims to establish a brand image in the international market by developing high-quality rice production regions. Furthermore, efforts are underway to strengthen the entire supply chain, including the development of cold chain logistics networks, thereby enhancing the added value of Vietnamese products for export and building a more stable supply system. Through these initiatives, Vietnam seeks to maintain its advantage in the rice export market and contribute to global food security. The recovery of rice exports is also considered to contribute to the stability of the Vietnamese economy. Source: Nhan Dan
