ASEAN Observer Team Inspects Cambodia-Thailand Border Pillar for Verification Mission

AKP Phnom Penh, August 4, 2026 -- The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) on Tuesday conducted a field visit to Boundary Pillar No. 37 in Banteay Meanchey province as part of its mission to observe, verify and report on the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of National Defence, the visit was coordinated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) and led by the Head of Mission of AOT-KH from the Philippines. The observation took place at the agreed boundary marker in Kdeb Thmar village, Kouk Romeat commune, Thmar Puok district. The Ministry said the mission aims to provide ASEAN observers with a comprehensive, first-hand understanding of the situation on the ground while demonstrating Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully through dialogue and bilateral mechanisms, in accordance with international law, existing bilateral agreements and the mandate of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC). The Royal Government of Cambodia reaffirmed its firm position on safeguarding the internationally recognised boundary between Cambodia and Thailand, based on the work of the Franco-Siamese boundary delimitation commissions, the principle of uti possidetis juris, relevant conventions and treaties, the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding, the 2003 Terms of Reference, and other bilateral agreements governing the peaceful settlement of border issues.
