Former MediUSA Chairman Sentenced to Over 16 Years in Prison for Counterfeit Food Sales

On July 31, the Hanoi City People's Court delivered guilty verdicts to 14 defendants in a case involving the production and sale of counterfeit food, violations of accounting regulations, bribery, and leakage of official secrets. The case originated at MediPhar Pharmaceutical Joint Venture Company. Notably, the former chairman of MediUSA, a subsidiary of MediPhar, received a prison sentence exceeding 16 years. Reports indicate the company was involved in the falsification of pharmaceutical raw materials and related bribery. This verdict is seen as a demonstration of the authorities' stance on food safety and corporate compliance in Vietnam. While the one-party state prioritizes economic growth, it is also intensifying crackdowns on corruption and misconduct, with this sentencing viewed as part of that effort.
