Vietnam Authorities Crack Down on Airport Taxi Fare Gouging Targeting Foreign Tourists

Authorities in Vietnam are taking a firm stance against the rampant overcharging of taxis targeting foreign visitors at major airports. This issue poses a significant challenge to the healthy development of Vietnam's tourism industry and the assurance of trust among international tourists. Recent reports indicate that some airport taxi drivers are unfairly charging foreign travelers exorbitant fees, significantly exceeding the normal rates. For instance, journeys that should cost around VND800,000 (approximately US$20) have been inflated to VND5-8 million (US$100-200). Furthermore, coercive tactics such as preventing passengers from leaving the vehicles if they refuse to pay have been reported, threatening the safety and dignity of the victims. In response, Vietnam's Road Transport Department (JPJ), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), conducted a special operation between June 12 and 26. JPJ officers engaged in undercover operations and received assistance from non-Vietnamese individuals to identify these touts. The operation focused on the airport's main terminals. Vietnam is a leading tourist destination in Southeast Asia, having welcomed 17.5 million foreign tourists by May 2024. However, such illicit practices risk damaging Vietnam's international reputation and leading to a decline in tourist numbers. The Vietnamese government intends to strengthen surveillance and crackdowns by law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe travel environment for tourists. Drivers found engaging in fraudulent activities are expected to face strict penalties. This situation highlights the strictness of law enforcement under Vietnam's one-party system, while also exposing the vulnerabilities of the tourism sector that supports economic growth. In relation to China, as the satisfaction of tourists impacts the country's overall image, authorities are seeking swift and effective measures.
