Thailand, Japan Cooperate to Boost Rail Cargo Transport, Aiming to Resolve Laem Chabang-ICD Bottleneck

Thailand's Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, held discussions with representatives from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) regarding cooperation to strengthen rail cargo transport within Thailand. The focus of the talks was on resolving logistical bottlenecks between Laem Chabang Port in Rayong Province and the Inland Container Depot (ICD) near Bangkok. This collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency of Thailand's logistics infrastructure and improve cargo handling capacity at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The discussions specifically addressed the low transport efficiency between ports and inland container depots, a significant challenge in Thailand's logistics network. Reliance on road transport for cargo movement from Laem Chabang Port to the ICD often leads to traffic congestion and increased costs. Leveraging rail transport holds the potential to overcome these issues and achieve faster, more efficient cargo movement. JETRO has a long history of contributing to Thailand's economic development and possesses extensive experience in supporting infrastructure development with advanced Japanese technology and expertise. Through this cooperation, Thailand is expected to modernize its rail cargo transport system by utilizing Japan's specialized knowledge. Minister Pipat emphasized that this collaboration would lead to reduced logistics costs and enhanced competitiveness for Thailand. He also stated that strengthening the cargo hub functions of Suvarnabhumi Airport is essential for establishing Thailand as a logistics center in Southeast Asia. This initiative is anticipated to contribute to the sustainable growth of the Thai economy.
