Massive Drug Bust in Northern Thailand: 2.6 Million Meth Pills Seized

CHIANG RAI – A dramatic high-speed police chase in northern Thailand concluded with a massive drug seizure, as officers confiscated 2.6 million methamphetamine pills from a wrecked red Mazda sedan in Uthai Thani early this morning. The pursuit had spanned multiple provinces after the vehicle was spotted by narcotics suppression officers. The two suspects were attempting to smuggle the illegal narcotics from Chiang Rai to Ayutthaya. Their plan unraveled when alert officers identified their distinctive vehicle and attempted to stop them in Nakhon Sawan. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, initiating a dangerous chase that led them through Lampang, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, and Nakhon Sawan. Around 8:00 PM on September 13, vigilant police finally spotted the targeted vehicle. Despite signaling the driver to pull over, the panicked driver sped away, sparking a high-speed pursuit into the dark rural roads toward Uthai Thani province. Tragically, the speeding red Mazda lost control and crashed heavily into a deep roadside ditch near Rai Oi Pattana village. The vehicle was completely wrecked, but both occupants miraculously survived and fled on foot into the surrounding dense area under the cover of darkness. Upon arriving at the crash scene, pursuing officers thoroughly searched the abandoned car and discovered 11 large sacks packed with approximately 2.6 million illegal meth pills. A massive manhunt involving the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Uthai Thani provincial police was immediately launched. Their collaborative efforts paid off in the early hours of Monday, September 14. Around 4:00 AM, the first suspect, identified as 35-year-old Siripong Wongnongiw, was apprehended hiding near Ban Thung Mon school in Sawang Arom district. By 6:00 AM, the second suspect, 40-year-old Prawat Wongsurakit, was spotted walking briskly toward the neighboring Lat Yao district and arrested. Both men have been officially charged with the illegal possession of Category 1 dangerous narcotics with intent to sell. This incident highlights the persistent challenge of drug trafficking in Thailand.
