186 pickpockets arrested in Yangon Region with 235 mobile phones, over 6.8 million kyats in six months

It is known that 186 pickpockets were arrested in the Yangon Region within six months, along with 235 mobile phones of various types and over 6.8 million kyats. Security forces are accelerating their efforts to maintain domestic security, ensure peace and prosperity in communities, and uphold the rule of law. In townships within the Yangon Region, security forces are conducting intelligence gathering and undercover surveillance to reduce group pickpocketing incidents on YBS bus lines, at bus stops, and in places frequented by the public, and are identifying and apprehending offenders for legal action. As a result of these efforts, from April 10, 2026, to September 16, 2026, over a six-month period, 186 offenders, comprising 165 males and 21 females, involved in 206 pickpocketing incidents in some townships within the Yangon Region were identified and apprehended along with the evidence obtained from the pickpocketing, namely 235 mobile phones of various types and 6,885,700 kyats in cash, and effective legal action has been taken in accordance with the law. Security forces are carrying out crime reduction and crime prevention activities day and night in cooperation with relevant administrative organizations within their jurisdictions to reduce crime and eradicate illicit activities in the Region and States. These activities include patrols, neighborhood watches, stakeouts, checking of household registration, awareness-raising lectures on crime, distribution of awareness-raising leaflets, awareness-raising lectures on traffic and road rules, and the apprehension of vehicles violating regulations.
