Vietnam Joins UNCLOS 50th Anniversary Celebration in Philippines

A Vietnamese delegation participated in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in the Philippines, engaging in discussions on enhancing maritime security and cooperation. The delegation underscored that the principles of UNCLOS serve as a "foundational code of conduct" guiding relations among countries amid profound global changes, rising geopolitical tensions, mounting challenges to international law, and the erosion of multilateralism. The event highlighted the role of UNCLOS in bolstering ASEAN centrality in the evolving regional order. Vietnam, alongside other ASEAN member states, reiterated its commitment to continuously strengthening the foundations of regional peace. Additionally, it was noted that the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) adopted the Manila Plan of Action for 2026–2036. Vietnam, while continuing its economic growth under a one-party system, is focused on protecting its maritime interests and maintaining regional stability. Relations with China, particularly concerning the South China Sea, are a crucial aspect of Vietnam's foreign policy, and the country strongly advocates for adherence to norms based on international law such as UNCLOS. Vietnam's participation in this anniversary event served as an opportunity to articulate its position and demonstrate its commitment to maritime security through international frameworks.
