Phnom Penh Strengthens Flood Preparedness Measures to Protect Residents and Infrastructure

Phnom Penh City has announced strengthened emergency response measures in response to the increasing risk of flood damage due to rising river levels and increased rainfall. This action is based on recommendations from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and the National Committee for Disaster Management. Due to its geographical location surrounded by major rivers such as the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Prek Tanoat, Phnom Penh has historically experienced flood impacts in certain areas annually due to rainwater. In response, the city has established a system to facilitate flood control, emergency rescue, and post-flood recovery activities. Specifically, the operational framework of the City's Disaster Management Committee is being reinforced, along with the strengthening of disaster management committees at the district and sub-district levels. An emergency response plan has also been developed, and relevant departments and local authorities are instructed to prepare for prompt rescue operations for affected residents. The plan aims to prevent flood damage, conduct timely and effective emergency responses, rescue affected residents, improve living standards, health, and well-being, protect property, and ensure security and safety. Particular emphasis is placed on proactive measures for flood-prone areas.
