Thai Authorities Expedite 300,000 Baht Compensation for Victims of Thepsirin Nonthaburi Shooting

Thailand's Department of Rights Protection and Liberties is expediting the compensation process for victims and their families affected by the recent tragic shooting incident at Thepsirin Nonthaburi School. Each deceased victim is set to receive 300,000 baht. The Nonthaburi Provincial Justice Office has established a support desk at the Police Hospital's Institute of Forensic Medicine to assist families with claiming bodies and provide information on their rights and compensation. According to the department, the compensation is provided under the 2001 Act on Compensation for Victims of Criminal Offences (and its 2016 amendment). Deceased victims will receive 300,000 baht, while injured individuals will have their actual medical expenses covered. Minor injuries and recovery within seven days will receive 10,000 baht, with medical costs reimbursed based on receipts. Victims experiencing psychological trauma, supported by a doctor's certificate, are also eligible for treatment costs and compensation. However, income compensation is limited to employed individuals, excluding students without professions. Currently, 31 cases, including seven deaths and several injuries, are undergoing the compensation process. The compensation for the seven deceased victims is expected to be submitted to the Nonthaburi Provincial Committee's subcommittee this week for approval, with payments anticipated within one week of approval. The disbursement method is under consideration, including bank transfers or direct handover to families. The 300,000 baht represents compensation solely from the Ministry of Justice, and additional support from other government agencies will be considered separately. The perpetrator, identified as a 14-year-old boy, will not receive compensation under this law. However, the perpetrator's grandparents, as heirs, may be eligible for compensation. The names of the five deceased faculty members have also been released, including an assistant director, an administrative officer, a guidance counselor, a mathematics teacher, and a Thai language teacher.
