Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital Provides Free Cataract Surgery for Policy Beneficiaries

Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital has launched a program to provide free cataract surgery to 40 individuals from policy beneficiary families, ahead of the upcoming War Invalids and Martyrs' Day on July 27. The initiative carries the message "Bright Eyes - Full of Gratitude." This program is positioned as part of Vietnam's long-standing policy of providing care for war invalids and the families of martyrs, who require support and reintegration into society after the end of the Second Indochina War (Vietnam War). Under Vietnam's one-party system, such social welfare policies are emphasized from the perspective of maintaining national stability and citizen unity, under the government's guidance. In recent years, Vietnam has seen rapid economic growth, which has also led to improvements in its healthcare infrastructure. However, disparities in access to medical services between urban and rural areas, or between economically disadvantaged groups and others, remain a persistent challenge. This free surgery initiative can be seen as an effort to address these disparities and improve access to healthcare. Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital is also involved in building a comprehensive refractive surgery ecosystem and undertaking similar medical support activities in other regions, demonstrating its commitment to fulfilling its social responsibilities as a medical institution.
