Hanoi to host Asia-Pacific dialogue on heritage, authenticity

Hanoi is poised to host an important Asia-Pacific dialogue on cultural heritage and authenticity. This event is particularly significant as it aligns with the UN General Assembly's recent adoption of the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development (2027–2036), highlighting Vietnam's growing proactive role in multilateral forums. UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany has expressed gratitude to Vietnam for championing this initiative. The dialogue is expected to explore the intersection of modern technological advancements and traditional craftsmanship, illustrating how communities strive to preserve time-honored values while integrating new innovations. The discourse will also likely address the pivotal role of science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation in the preservation, creation, and dissemination of cultural heritage, as noted by Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Lan, Director of the institute. Vietnam's commitment to its rich cultural tapestry is further evidenced by various regional events and initiatives. The Mekong Delta's unique waterways, boats, and handicrafts have been showcased, bringing the southern region's distinctive character to life. In Ta Dung, the Dak R’mang area serves as a vital space for the Mong people to preserve memories of their northwestern hometowns and cultural identity in their new land. In Son La province, efforts are underway to promote the nature, culture, and people of Long Sap, fostering stronger cooperation for sustainable socio-economic development. Challenges in cultural transmission are also acknowledged, such as the difficulties faced by Vietnamese communities abroad in teaching traditional songs and dances to younger generations due to environmental and linguistic differences. Concurrently, Vietnamese films are gaining increasing international traction, indicating a growing global interest in the country's cinematic productions. In the context of Vietnam's one-party system, cultural policies often aim to strengthen national unity and identity. The hosting of international dialogues on heritage and sustainability can be viewed as a strategic move by Vietnam to utilize culture as a diplomatic asset, thereby enhancing its international standing. This focus on cultural heritage, alongside economic growth, is integral to Vietnam's national branding and the development of its soft power.
