Driver Pushes Traffic Police Officer While Being Stopped, Flees Scene in Hanoi

In Hanoi, a driver who ignored police instructions during a traffic stop, pushed an officer with his vehicle, and fled the scene has been identified and is now under investigation. On July 21, the Traffic Police Department of the Hanoi City Police announced that they had handed over the 30-year-old driver to the Tu Liem District Police for further investigation into charges of failing to comply with the orders of law enforcement officials. The incident occurred around 8:20 AM on July 20, at the intersection of Pham Hung and Nguyen Hoang. A patrol team from the No. 6 Road Traffic Police Unit spotted a Ford Territory vehicle making an illegal left turn in a prohibited area and signaled it to stop for inspection. However, the driver did not comply. Instead, he drove the car forward, forcing the traffic police officer to retreat about 15 meters to avoid being hit. The driver then fled the scene. Following the circulation of video footage of the incident, the Traffic Police Department immediately launched an investigation. Measures were implemented, including the use of AI camera systems, to track down the vehicle and the driver. By the evening of the same day, traffic police had identified the driver and summoned him to the police station for questioning. The driver admitted to his actions of disobeying the traffic police's orders. According to Vietnam's current regulations (Decree 168/2024), drivers who fail to comply with the orders and directions of traffic police face fines ranging from VND 18 million to VND 20 million for car drivers, and VND 4 million to VND 6 million for motorbike riders. Violators also risk having 4 points deducted from their driving license and could face suspension for 1 to 5 months.
