Accused Driver's Father Pays $60,000 Compensation, But Driver Remains Incarcerated

In a fatal drunk driving accident case in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the father of the accused driver, Sam Meichu, has reportedly paid $60,000 USD in compensation to the victim's family. The settlement and compensation handover took place on August 6, 2026, at the Khchau Commune Hall in Kang Meas District, Kampong Cham Province. Commune officials and lawyers were present during the proceedings, and the compensation was given to the victim's wife, Khuon Ponny. Despite the compensation paid by the accused's family, Sam Meichu remains incarcerated to face legal consequences. On the evening of July 31, 2026, Judge Sam Vasana of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued an order to provisionally detain the accused, Sam Meichu, at the Phnom Penh Municipal Prison (PJ). She is charged with causing a traffic accident resulting in death and fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, in front of AEON Market 2 on Street 1003, in the Banhlea Sreut village, Snuol commune, Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh. These alleged actions fall under Article 85 of the Law on Road Traffic and Article 543 of the Criminal Code. This case highlights the dual nature of legal proceedings in Cambodia, where civil compensation can be arranged while criminal charges are pursued independently under the law.
