Indonesian Lawmaker Pushes for Legal Harmonization and Stricter Contracts for Seafarers

Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) member Yulius Setiarto is strongly pushing for the harmonization and stricter regulation of employment contracts for seafarers (ABK). This proposal aims to ensure that Indonesian seafarers can work under safer and fairer labor conditions that comply with international labor standards. As an archipelagic nation with vast maritime territories, maritime transportation is the lifeline of Indonesia's economic activities. However, it is often pointed out that the laws and regulations concerning seafarers' working conditions and contracts lag behind international standards. This situation is believed to lead to cases where seafarers' rights are not adequately protected or where they are forced into unfair labor. Mr. Setiarto's proposal could be a concrete step towards improving this situation. Harmonization of legal frameworks means ensuring that domestic laws and regulations are consistent with international conventions and the advanced legal systems of other countries.
