Thailand to Reduce Visa-Free Stay Duration to Tackle Crime and Boost Tourism
The Thai government has decided to shorten the visa-free stay period to 30 or 15 days for many nationalities, aiming to prevent foreign scammers and criminals from entering the country. This move seeks to balance tourism promotion with national security.
The Thai cabinet has approved a reduction in visa-free entry from the current 60 days to 30 or 15 days, depending on a country's eligibility. This measure, announced on July 15, aims to close loopholes exploited by foreign scammers and criminal gangs entering the country. According to Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, the number of visa-free days for 93 countries and territories has been revised based on the principle of "1 country, 1 right." Under the new measures, 59 countries and territories will be granted a 30-day visa-free stay. Six countries—India, Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, and Maldives—have been added to this list. This change means all EU member states will now enjoy the same privilege, which is expected to boost international relations and aid negotiations for Schengen visa exemption for Thai citizens, as well as the conclusion of bilateral economic agreements. Furthermore, Mauritius and Seychelles will be granted a 15-day visa exemption for tourism, subject to review based on tourist numbers and spending patterns. India has also been granted this 15-day exemption, recognizing its significant role in economy, trade, investment, and international relations, with Indian tourists typically staying an average of 7.17 days per trip. For visa on arrival at immigration checkpoints, priority will be given to Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Serbia. India's visa on arrival privilege has been revoked as it has now been granted a 15-day visa exemption, preventing duplication. The approved changes will make a total of 65 countries and territories eligible for various visa measures. Five related draft announcements by the Interior Ministry will come into effect 15 days after their publication in the Royal Gazette. Foreign nationals who entered Thailand and received benefits under the previous measures before the new announcements take effect will be able to extend their stay for the remaining period of their original entitlement. In addition, security agencies are enhancing the efficiency of Thailand’s Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) system for screening foreign nationals' backgrounds and verifying their entry and exit. Database linking among related agencies is also being expedited to assess risks at the point of origin and track the use of benefits to ensure they align with their intended purposes. "This review of the measures is not aimed at reducing tourism opportunities but rather is an adjustment of the system to make it more appropriate, clearer, and more verifiable, in order to maintain a balance between stimulating the economy, facilitating tourism, international relations, and national security," Ploytalay stated.
