President To Lam Meets UN General Assembly President, Highlights Vietnam's UN Contributions

On September 22, 2024 (New York local time), Vietnamese President To Lam met with the President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Khalilur Rahman, in New York. This meeting aimed to highlight Vietnam's role in the international community, particularly within the UN, and to strengthen future cooperation. During the meeting, President To Lam emphasized Vietnam's active contributions to maintaining international peace and security and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. He specifically pointed to Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping operations and its initiatives in resolving global challenges as evidence of its responsible stance. In response, President Rahman highly commended Vietnam's proactive contributions to the UN and its constructive role in regional and international affairs. He also acknowledged Vietnam's contributions to discussions and decision-making processes within the UN General Assembly, expressing his expectations for enhanced future collaboration. Both leaders also exchanged views on the importance of joint efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, poverty reduction, and the promotion of education and healthcare. Vietnam indicated its intention to further deepen cooperation with the UN in tackling these issues. This meeting served as an opportunity to reaffirm Vietnam's commitment to multilateralism and its ongoing contributions to global peace and development. Under its one-party system, Vietnam's foreign policy seeks to enhance its international standing and stabilize economic growth by balancing national interests with international cooperation, deepening ties with international organizations like the UN. Particularly, amidst a complex relationship with China, increasing its voice on diverse international platforms, including the UN, holds significant importance for Vietnam's diplomatic strategy.
