Cambodia, Japan Discuss Strengthening Parliamentary Ties and Regional Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, Sep 21, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Japan have discussed strengthening parliamentary ties and expanding regional cooperation, including developments related to the Cambodia–Thailand border situation, officials said Monday. Dr. Chhiv Yiseang, chairman of the Senate’s Commission 5 and director of the Cabinet of Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen, met Takahito Misumi, Japan’s newly appointed chargé d’affaires ad interim in Phnom Penh, and his colleagues to review bilateral and regional cooperation. Yiseang welcomed Misumi and congratulated him on his appointment, while expressing a positive assessment of Cambodia–Japan relations. He highlighted progress in strengthening the partnership across economic, trade and infrastructure development, human‑resource training, culture, education and security. The two sides exchanged views on parliamentary diplomacy, Japan’s contribution to Cambodia’s socio‑economic development and further cooperation within regional and multilateral frameworks. Particular attention was given to ASEAN–Japan cooperation and recent developments in the region and beyond. The meeting also touched on the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute, with Yiseang stressing Cambodia’s position on using peaceful mechanisms to resolve differences. He underlined the Senate’s commitment to dialogue and international law in addressing the issue, while situating the dispute within the broader regional context. Yiseang expressed readiness to work closely with Misumi and the Japanese Embassy to further strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries, reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to deepening parliamentary exchanges and regional engagement.
