Sri Lanka Opens Honorary Consulate in Cambodia, Boosting Ties and Economic Cooperation
Sri Lanka has officially inaugurated its Honorary Consulate in Cambodia, marking a new milestone in deepening the long-standing friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The move is expected to foster economic ties, trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka officially inaugurated its Honorary Consulate in the Kingdom of Cambodia on Wednesday, marking a new milestone in the long-standing friendship and expanding bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The inauguration ceremony was held at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh under the presidency of H.E. Un Kheang, Secretary of State at Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. Ms. E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Cambodia. Diplomats, government officials, and business leaders also attended the event. Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Un Kheang described the opening of the Honorary Consulate as a historic achievement that reflects the shared commitment of Cambodia and Sri Lanka to further deepen their long-standing friendship and expand bilateral cooperation in the years ahead. He noted that relations between Cambodia and Sri Lanka date back more than 1,000 years through their shared Theravada Buddhist heritage. The establishment of the Honorary Consulate, he said, comes at a timely moment to strengthen dialogue and promote broader cooperation. Beyond bilateral ties, both countries have consistently supported one another in regional and multilateral forums, a partnership that has become increasingly important amid rapid changes in the global landscape that call for stronger dialogue, multilateralism, and the peaceful resolution of international challenges. H.E. Un Kheang expressed confidence that the Honorary Consulate would serve as an effective bridge between the two nations by promoting economic cooperation, facilitating trade and investment, boosting tourism, encouraging cultural and educational exchanges, and providing valuable consular services and assistance to Sri Lankan nationals residing in Cambodia. H.E. Ms. E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Cambodia, described the occasion as a meaningful milestone not only for herself but also for the diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between the two countries. She added that although geographically distant, Cambodia and Sri Lanka share deep cultural and religious bonds through Theravada Buddhism. The newly established Honorary Consulate would play a vital role in promoting bilateral trade, cross-border investment, tourism development, and people-to-people exchanges, while providing essential consular services and serving as a 'warm home' for Sri Lankan citizens living in or visiting Cambodia. The opening of this honorary consulate signifies Cambodia's efforts to enhance its regional presence and strengthen ties with a diverse range of countries. It can be viewed as part of Cambodia's diplomatic strategy to maintain a balanced relationship with various regional nations, especially as its ties with China deepen. Economically, it is anticipated to attract investment from Sri Lanka and open up trade routes between the two countries.
