Cambodia: Senator Highlights Buddhism-State Link During Temple Donations

On July 26, 2026, a ceremony for the donation of offerings was held in Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province, presided over by Senator Khuon Khundee, who also serves as the head of the working group for local support in Kampong Svay district. During the event, Senator Khundee stated that "the connection between the Buddhist clergy and the state cannot be severed." The ceremony took place at Puttarangssey Pagoda (Trapeang Ruy Phey village) in Kampong Svay district, with the participation of senators, members of the National Assembly, government officials, members of the Kampong Thom Provincial Council, local civil servants, and a large number of citizens. Senator Khundee explained that the organization of this event was a result of the solidarity and cooperation between the leadership and the local support team for Kampong Svay district. She highlighted that it reflects progress in religious adherence and deep respect for Buddhism, which is the state religion, as well as demonstrating the spirit of solidarity, friendship, and support from the citizens. She expressed her profound gratitude to the abbots of the pagodas, the lay Buddhists, various philanthropists, and leaders at all levels who strived and cooperated according to their faith, filled with great joy. Furthermore, the donation of candles for the rainy season signifies social solidarity and support for the promotion of Buddhism, the state religion. It also serves to dedicate great merit to the souls of ancestors and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation and homeland. Senator Khundee added that the peace and national development in all sectors that Cambodia enjoys today are a legacy left by the outstanding national leader, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate. She prayed to the sacred powers of the world to protect the Buddhist followers and the working group, wishing them all happiness. It is noted that each pagoda received one pair of rainy season candles, 50 kilograms of rice, two cases of mineral water, two cases of soft drinks, one bottle of soy sauce, one bottle of fish sauce, one bottle of canned fish, one cup of 'sing' (bean paste) weighing 2.5 kilograms, and a certain amount of cash.
