Indonesia's Economy Expands 5.29% in Q1 Amid Global Uncertainty

Indonesia's economy recorded a growth of 5.29 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing analyst forecasts amidst global economic uncertainties, according to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS). The growth was primarily driven by a recovery in household consumption and continued government infrastructure spending. Consumer spending saw an uptick in anticipation of the fasting month of Ramadan and the subsequent Eid al-Fitr holiday, boosting domestic demand. The government also maintained its expenditure on public works to stimulate economic activity. Sectors such as information and communication, transportation and warehousing, construction, and wholesale and retail trade showed notable expansion. These sectors are benefiting from digitalization advancements and infrastructure development. Conversely, agriculture, forestry, and fishing, as well as mining and quarrying, experienced slower growth. Geographically, Java remained the economic powerhouse, contributing the most to the overall growth. However, other islands like Sumatra and Kalimantan also demonstrated steady economic expansion, suggesting progress in reducing regional economic disparities. This growth, occurring amidst global economic slowdowns and persistent geopolitical risks, indicates that the Indonesian economy has built a relatively stable foundation driven by domestic factors. Nevertheless, future international developments and domestic inflation trends will continue to be factors requiring close observation.
