Cambodia: Doctor's Prison Sentence Increased to 10 Years for Medical Negligence and Body Concealment
Cambodia's Court of Appeal has increased a doctor's prison sentence from 5 to 10 years for medical negligence leading to a patient's death and subsequent concealment of the body and a 3-year-old niece. Sun Marina, who also operated without a license, was found guilty of multiple charges.
Phnom Penh Court of Appeal on September 23, 2026, decided to increase the prison sentence of the accused, Sun Marina, female, 39 years old, a former nurse and owner of a private clinic in Baty district, Takeo province, from 5 years to 10 years. She is involved in injecting a patient who died, then disposing of the body and the victim's 3-year-old niece in the forest to conceal evidence. This case occurred on the night of November 18, 2024, in Chamkar village, Chombok commune, Baty district, Takeo province. It should be noted that in this case, the Takeo Provincial Court, on November 17, 2025, decided: 1. To sentence the accused, Sun Marina, female, 39 years old, to 5 (five) years in prison and a fine of 8,000,000 (eight million) Riel into the state budget for the crimes of: unintentional homicide, practicing healthcare without a license, concealing a corpse, torture, and cruel acts with aggravating circumstances related to the victim. 2. To sentence the accused, Hien Songhak, male, 37 years old (husband of Sun Marina), to 1 year in prison and a fine of 3 million Riel into the state budget for the crime of practicing healthcare without a license, causing death.
