Cambodia Ministry of Justice Warns Against AI-Generated Fake Photos and Misinformation

The Cambodian Ministry of Justice has issued a warning regarding information circulating on social media about a gong (a Buddhist ritual instrument) allegedly stolen from Wat Svay Meas in Phnom Penh. According to the ministry, analyses and discussions are ongoing on social media concerning images of "a man holding a gong inside a temple" and videos of "a man selling a gong," but much of this information is false. Lor Krem, an official from the Ministry of Justice, clarified two points on his Facebook account. Firstly, he stated that the "photo of a man holding a gong inside a temple" circulating on social media is not an image extracted from security camera footage but has been generated by AI. Secondly, he explained that the gong shown in the video of a man selling it is not the one lost from Wat Svay Meas, noting that the temple's gong features traditional Khmer-style carvings. He also added that the origin of this video is unknown. Currently, the case of the stolen gong is under the jurisdiction of the court, which is investigating to ascertain the truth and ensure justice for all parties.
