GSCB urges nationwide public movement on Martyrs' Day

July 14 Mizzima. The General Strike Coordination Body (GSCB) has urged for a nationwide public movement on the upcoming Martyrs' Day, July 19, under the theme "All Martyrs are immortal in history," according to a statement released today (July 14). It is understood that the movement will be carried out in honor of the nine leaders of the national liberation struggle, the martyrs, and all other martyrs. Participation in the movement can be made by gathering and paying homage at statues of generals, independence monuments, and martyrs' tombs, holding commemorative events, observing silence, blowing horns, and honking at exactly 10:37 AM on July 19, the day the martyr leaders fell, and by wearing black clothing, ribbons, and hats. GSCB stated that although the military junta can demolish statues, they cannot demolish the spirit of martyrs in the hearts of the public, and this movement will prove it. It also demanded the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners, the repeal of the conscription law, and the reaffirmation that U Win Myint is the head of state and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the State Counsellor. GSCB pointed out that the military junta is attempting to indoctrinate the younger generation with militarism, spread fabricated history, and distort the history of independence, and is working to suppress the spirit of Aung San and the spirit of martyrs by destroying and removing statues of General Aung San in various towns and regions.
