US welcomes ICRC visit to Suu Kyi, calls for regular humanitarian access

The United States has welcomed the ICRC’s confirmed visit to detained former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, with the U.S. Embassy saying it hoped the meeting marks “the beginning of regular humanitarian access” to her and opens a pathway to greater access for all political prisoners. The embassy repeated Washington’s call for Suu Kyi’s immediate and unconditional release, urging Myanmar’s military-backed authorities to guarantee her access to medical care and family visits, and called for the release of all those it described as unjustly detained. It also urged the military to engage in dialogue with all parties to end the conflict in Myanmar, adding Washington’s voice to a growing list of governments, including the UK, that have responded to Monday’s ICRC-confirmed visit with renewed demands for Suu Kyi’s release.
