Vietnam: Young female party official expelled for corruption
Nguyen Phuong Thao, a promising young female party official born in 1990, has been expelled from Vietnam's Communist Party for severe ideological, moral, and lifestyle decadence and legal violations. Her career, which saw her rise to the top of the organization in just over a decade, has abruptly ended.
Vietnam's Communist Party has expelled Nguyen Phuong Thao, a promising young official born in 1990, from its ranks due to severe ideological, moral, and lifestyle decadence, as well as violations of regulations. Thao was unanimously elected Secretary of the Quang Ninh Provincial Youth Union (Tỉnh đoàn) in July 2025 at the age of 29, and was considered a rising star. However, in late July 2026, the Central Inspection Committee recommended her expulsion, a decision subsequently approved by the Party Central Committee. According to the announcement, Thao violated Party regulations and state laws, engaged in acts prohibited for Party members, and failed in her exemplary responsibilities, leading to extremely serious consequences, public dissatisfaction, and damage to the reputation of Party organizations, localities, and her workplace. Thao began her career as a contract employee at the Quang Ninh Provincial Youth Union in August 2013. She became a Party member in 2018 and rose to the position of Secretary in just over a decade. With degrees in International Economics and Trade, Economic Law, and a Master's in Public Management, she was initially assessed as capable, creative, and enthusiastic. This expulsion underscores the strict discipline within Vietnam's one-party system and its stance against corruption and misconduct. Those expelled from the Party often lose their government positions and may face criminal prosecution. Among those expelled alongside Thao are Hoang Trung, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Do Truong Giang, former Director of the Lao Cai Department of Industry and Trade; and Duong Thanh Trung, former Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee. Several of these individuals have already been prosecuted for corruption charges, and further investigations into Thao's case are anticipated. The position of Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union is traditionally a stepping stone for potential Party leaders. Thao's downfall highlights that the path for elite bureaucrats in Vietnam is under strict scrutiny. Her predecessor, Nguyen The Minh, was also expelled on the same day, with their alleged wrongdoings reportedly linked to the Quang Ninh Provincial Youth Union.
