  • Plan to implement a system allowing farmers to deposit paddy in warehouses to prevent price suppression during harvest season

AYEYARWADDY TIMES October 6 It has been learned from a statement by the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) that a system is being planned to allow farmers to deposit paddy in designated warehouses without selling it immediately, in order to ensure better prices for farmers, as paddy prices tend to fall during the current harvest season. According to the system, when crops, including paddy, are deposited, third-party experts will inspect and accept them based on quality and quantity, and issue warehouse receipts. It is understood that these receipts can be used as collateral or security for short-term loans. "It would be good if such a collateral system works well. It would be even better if it could reach the villages. During the current harvest season, brokers come down to the villages to buy. Then, transportation costs are not incurred. For depositing in warehouses now, there will be transportation costs and labor costs. Will there be warehouses near our villages? Such things are needed," a rice and paddy trader told the Ayeyarwaddy Times. Furthermore, MRF has stated that it is cooperating with the interim government to implement a system where deposited crops can be sold at good prices and loans can be repaid. Currently, there are 5,886 warehouses available for paddy farmers to use during the peak harvest months of November and December, and plans are underway to start operations in warehouses that meet the need for drying facilities. Banks that will provide loans with reasonable interest rates for short-term periods of 6 to 9 months based on these crop deposits, and organizations that will provide insurance, are also being invited to cooperate in the business. It is understood that by storing in warehouses equipped with drying facilities, losses can be reduced, farmers' incomes can increase, and crop quality can improve. It will be possible to systematically store and manage the country's crops during a period of severe climate change.
