BPI Integrates PhilSys for Streamlined Account Opening
Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has integrated the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) into its account opening process, allowing national ID holders to verify their identity via selfie instead of uploading documents.
Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has integrated the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) into its account opening process, aiming to streamline the procedure. Under this new initiative, customers possessing a national ID (PhilSys ID) can now verify their identity through a selfie, replacing the need to upload scanned identification documents. BPI President and Chief Executive Officer Jose Teodoro K. Limcaoco announced that this integration was formalized through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). He highlighted the initiative's objectives as facilitating a smoother account opening process, strengthening digital security, and expanding financial inclusion. PhilSys is a national project by the Philippine government to provide a universal ID to all citizens, with the goal of digitizing and enhancing the efficiency of government services. The active adoption of PhilSys by a major financial institution like BPI is a significant step towards improving access to financial services in the Philippines, particularly for segments of the population that have previously been unbanked. Furthermore, selfie verification is expected to reduce the risk of fraudulent activities and further bolster the security of digital banking. This development is seen as a catalyst for accelerating digital transformation and modernizing financial infrastructure in the Philippines. It is anticipated that other financial institutions may follow suit, potentially influencing the broader financial services market in the country.
