PH Gov’t Urged to Boost Net Zero Push

A group of executives, including those from First Gen, pushing for net zero aims to secure stronger government backing to ensure the Philippines stays competitive. Allan Barcena, executive director of the Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA), said the group has been “aggressive” in forging tie-ups with the private sector and government agencies. He stressed that achieving the net zero goals requires clearer direction and supporting policies from the government. The Philippines, being one of the countries highly vulnerable to climate change, faces an urgent task to transition to net zero to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the energy and industrial sectors, is a complex challenge that needs to be balanced with economic growth. Businesses believe that by presenting a clear roadmap and introducing incentives to promote investment in renewable energy, along with innovative policies like emissions trading systems, the government can attract private investment. These initiatives would not only boost the international competitiveness of the Philippine economy but also strengthen its resilience against future climate change risks.
