Phu Quoc's MICE Ambitions Boosted by Airport Upgrades and International Attention

Phu Quoc island in Vietnam is increasingly capturing international attention as an emerging MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) powerhouse, bolstered by significant upgrades to its international airport infrastructure and the development of new tourism attractions. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed accelerating investment in a parallel taxiway system and a connecting taxiway north of Runway No. 2 at Phu Quoc International Airport for the period 2021-2030. This initiative aims to connect with a planned aircraft maintenance and repair facility (hangar) in the northern area of the airport, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting larger-scale events. At the core of the island's transformation is DT975, a vital corridor linking Phu Quoc International Airport with the APEC Convention Centre. This route is being developed with a 62-meter cross-section, featuring 10 motor vehicle lanes and an integrated light rail transit (LRT) line, positioning it as a cornerstone of the island's future transport network. Phu Quoc plays a crucial role in Vietnam's broader tourism strategy. The country targets 25-27 million international visitors and 150-153 million domestic tourists by 2026, with total revenue projected at 1.12-1.23 quadrillion VND (approximately 47.34 billion USD). The MICE segment, in particular, holds the potential to evolve the island from a largely seasonal resort destination into a year-round tourism hub, increasing per-visitor spending and attracting corporate groups and international professionals. Resolution No. 26-NQ/TW, a key government directive, identifies Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang as major tourism growth poles while gradually transforming Phu Quoc into a new growth pole. It also calls for the development of 10 key tourism centers and 20 national tourism areas, indicating a strategic push for diversified and sophisticated tourism development across the country. Recent years have seen Phu Quoc gain significant international traction, partly due to attractions like 'Sunset Town.' This area offers a blend of Asia's finest beaches alongside vibrant entertainment spectacles, including fireworks, jet skis, and European-inspired architecture, creating a unique contrast that appeals to global travelers. Furthermore, strategic cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, particularly in payments, hospitality, and aviation, is bringing high-level commitments closer to tangible projects. This collaboration is expected to contribute to the enhancement of tourism infrastructure and services in Vietnam, including Phu Quoc.
