AI Summary

Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce is leveraging the e-commerce platform CambodiaTrade to introduce hundreds of domestic products, including handicrafts, food, and apparel, to international markets. This initiative is part of a government effort to boost domestic consumption and reduce reliance on imports.

The Ministry of Commerce is actively promoting Cambodian products to international markets through its e-commerce platform, CambodiaTrade, which now features hundreds of domestic goods. Pen Sovicheat, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, stated that the ministry fully supports these efforts by developing the "Made in Cambodia" brand. To broaden the reach of Cambodian products, the ministry has established the CambodiaTrade platform to introduce Khmer goods into the international market. The platform currently lists hundreds of Cambodian products categorized into five types: souvenirs and handicrafts (approximately 452 items), food and beverages (approximately 415 items), clothing and footwear (217 items), and soaps and cosmetics (216 items). Sovicheat further explained that even if some raw materials are sourced from abroad, if they add significant value to the local production chain, the final product is still considered Cambodian under Original Design Manufacturing (ODM). He emphasized that by promoting domestic production, Cambodia can gradually replace imported goods with locally manufactured alternatives. The President of the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia noted a growth in domestic product consumption, capturing about 30% of the market share. Citizens have reportedly engaged in boycotts of Thai products, increasing their support for local alternatives. Oknha Tay Klangpa, President of the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia, previously stated in a forum under the "Let's Produce Together, Let's Use National Products" campaign that the support for domestic products from the Cambodian people has seen a remarkable increase. Local enterprises are also striving to expand their production lines to meet domestic demand. Speaking at a gathering with the family of Cambodian SMEs and handicraft businesses, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet recognized the potential for further expansion of domestic products. He highlighted that Cambodian citizens spend billions of dollars annually on importing food and daily necessities from abroad. According to the Prime Minister, redirecting even 30% of this expenditure towards supporting domestic businesses and products would significantly bolster the national economy.
