Fuel Price Rollback Expected Next Week Amid Middle East De-escalation
Filipinos can expect a rollback in fuel prices next week, with estimates suggesting decreases for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene due to the easing of tensions in the Middle East impacting crude oil prices. This marks the 30th price adjustment of the year.
Motorists in the Philippines can anticipate a welcome relief next week as fuel prices are expected to roll back, influenced by recent developments in the Middle East conflict. Department of Energy-Oil Industry Management Bureau (DOE-OIMB) Director Rino Abad noted a slight decrease in prices observed over the past four days. Abad projected potential price decreases of approximately P0.80 per liter for gasoline, P0.50 per liter for diesel, and P2.30 per liter for kerosene. An oil industry source corroborated this, suggesting a rollback of P0.50 to P1.00 per liter for diesel and P1.00 to P1.50 per liter for gasoline. Global oil prices, which surged above $100 per barrel last week due to expanded threats to Middle East crude supplies, weakened earlier this week. This was attributed to cautious optimism over a potential US-Iran truce outweighing geopolitical risks. However, the source cautioned that demand-supply balances for diesel and gasoline remain tight, explaining the smaller anticipated rollback. Oil companies typically announce their price adjustments every Monday, with the changes implemented the following day. The most recent adjustment, effective July 28, saw significant price hikes: P6.80 per liter for gasoline, P7.30 to P7.32 per liter for diesel, and P4.20 to P4.22 per liter for kerosene. These adjustments marked the 30th price movement of the year, resulting in cumulative net increases of P56.72 per liter for gasoline, P57.75 per liter for diesel, and P52.61 per liter for kerosene since the beginning of the year. This price volatility directly impacts the Philippine economy, affecting transportation costs, logistics, and household budgets. Fluctuations in fuel prices are closely monitored by the government due to their influence on inflation. The Philippines' heavy reliance on imported crude oil underscores the significant impact of global geopolitical events on its domestic economy.
