Indian Businessman Arrested to Serve One-Year Prison Sentence for Debt Default

An Indian businessman, Potti Suresh Krishnan, 56, has been arrested in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to serve a one-year prison sentence following a final court ruling for "failure to fulfill obligations for negotiable instruments." The arrest was carried out on September 10, 2026, by the Phnom Penh Municipal Police's Criminal Division, based on an arrest and detention warrant issued by Mr. Sam Mul Rithy Vasna, Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court. Krishnan, residing at House No. 18, Street 1978, Phum Phnom Penh Thmey, Sangkat Phnom Penh Thmey, Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh, was found guilty by the court after reviewing the case file and related documents. The conviction stems from a criminal judgment, No. 572 "Ch1," issued by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court. According to the court's decision, the convicted individual was sentenced to one year in prison for the offense committed on September 1, 2019, in Phnom Penh. This offense falls under Article 231 of the Law on Negotiable Instruments. Despite the finality of the court's judgment, Krishnan had not yet served the imposed prison term.
