The 31st Coordination Meeting of the Supreme Court of the Union, Region and State High Courts, Self-Administered Division Courts, Self-Administered Zone Courts, and District Courts was held Tuesday via videoconference at the Judicial College of the Supreme Court of the Union in Nay Pyi Taw. Chief Justice of the Union U Tha Htay attended and delivered the opening address. In his address, Chief Justice U Tha Htay stated that adjudicating cases fairly and promptly in accordance with the law is a fundamental duty of the judiciary. He urged attendees to be mindful that acquitting offenders, imposing penalties disproportionate to the crimes committed, and wrongfully convicting innocent persons constitute judicial deviations. Regarding drug offenses, human trafficking, online fraud, acts of lawlessness committed by organized groups that could undermine the rule of law, and crimes that may affect national security, he emphasized that if guilt is clearly established, effective and deterrent penalties must be imposed. He called for continued collective efforts to successfully implement the Fourth Year Work Plan (2026) of the Judicial Strategic Plan (2023–2027). He also stressed that corruption not only damages individuals' morals and integrity but also undermines public trust and confidence in the judiciary, and therefore, rigorous oversight must be exercised at all levels to ensure that all staff remain free from corruption. He urged everyone to faithfully and diligently carry out their assigned duties and to work collectively for the integrity and fairness of the judiciary and for the development of the judicial sector. The coordination meeting was attended in person by Supreme Court justices, Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General, and Directors. Region/State High Court Chief Justices and judges, Region/State Chief Judicial Officers, Self-Administered Division Court judges, Self-Administered Zone Court judges, and District Court judges participated via videoconference. The meeting will continue on July 15, it’s learnt.
