DepEd Orders Stricter School Safety Measures Following Zamboanga Stabbing

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday called on all schools and its offices nationwide to intensify implementation of school safety and child protection policies amid a new stabbing incident at Zamboanga City. Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the agency expresses deep concern over the stabbing incident in Cabaluay National High School. According to Barangay Cabaluay officials, at least three Grade 11 students were involved in the incident this Wednesday, involving one suspect and two student-victims. “Our immediate priority is the welfare and recovery of the two injured learners,” Angara said in a statement. DepEd also said it is coordinating with the Regional Office and the Schools Division Office to ensure that interventions are promptly provided to the victims and their families. “As investigation proceeds, the Department will ensure that appropriate child protection measures, guidance services, and psychosocial support are extended to affected learners and personnel, while fully observing due process,” Angara added. Meanwhile, the Schools Division Office of Zamboanga City in a separate statement called on the public to avoid spreading unverified information as investigations remain ongoing. The incident is the latest in a string of school-related violence reported in recent weeks, prompting lawmakers to renew calls for stronger school safety and child protection measures.
