Indonesia Establishes National Peat and Mangrove Management Agency Under President to Combat Forest Fires

The Indonesian government has established the National Peat and Mangrove Management Agency (Badan Pengelola Gambut dan Mangrove Nasional) to strengthen the management of peatlands and mangrove forests and prevent severe forest fires (Karhutla). This new agency, operating directly under the President, will be responsible for formulating and implementing policies related to the conservation and management of these vital ecosystems. Indonesia is particularly prone to large-scale forest fires, especially during the dry season, often caused by the drying of peatlands and deforestation.
