Vietnam Swimming: Youth Talent Development Faces Challenges Despite Asian Success

The young swimmers from Vietnam, who recently clinched 14 gold medals at the 2026 Asian Age Group Swimming Championships, have ignited significant hopes for the nation's sports sector. However, a historical challenge persists: while Vietnam's swimming scene is not short of talent in the 18-19 age bracket, it lacks a sufficiently robust system to propel these gifted athletes to the pinnacle of continental and global competitions. This situation underscores the need for Vietnam to adopt a more systematic and long-term strategy in identifying and nurturing its promising young swimmers. Past instances have shown that athletes who shine in domestic competitions sometimes struggle to maintain that momentum on the international stage. This highlights the importance of a comprehensive development program that goes beyond individual talent, encompassing the quality of coaching, training facilities, competition schedules, and the psychological and physical support provided during the athletes' formative years.
