Cambodia Boosts Clean Energy Manufacturing Amid Fuel Price Volatility

PHNOM PENH, Sept 14, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia will host its largest clean energy event this week, aiming to reduce exposure to volatile global fuel prices and build a supply chain around clean energy manufacturing, organisers said Monday. Clean Energy Week 2026 will run from September 15 to 21, opening with a summit in Phnom Penh. The event is organised by the Cambodian government, Australia and the UN Development Programme. Opening remarks will be delivered by Natharoun Ngo Son, regional director for energy and economy at EnergyLab Asia, Australian Ambassador Derek Yip and a representative of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Organisers said the summit will position clean energy as central to Cambodia’s energy security and resilience, arguing that reducing reliance on fossil fuels will shield sectors such as agriculture and garment manufacturing from global price swings while improving competitiveness. A Clean Energy and Economic Competitiveness report will be launched, alongside a presentation on unlocking Cambodia’s clean energy manufacturing supply chain. On September 16, the programme will convene Cambodia’s first Clean Energy Skills Conference, presided over by Labour Minister Heng Sour, focused on closing workforce gaps and aligning training with sector demands. The government is seeking to diversify into higher‑value manufacturing, including electronics, automotive assembly and clean energy, as part of a broader push to reduce dependence on garment exports and reach high‑income status by 2050. Cambodia’s growth is projected at 4.1 percent in 2026, with rising fuel prices weighing on the outlook.
