38 Umrah Pilgrims Stranded in Jeddah, Indonesian Ministry Investigates Travel Agency

Thirty-eight Umrah pilgrims from South Kalimantan (Kalsel), Indonesia, have been stranded in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The issue is believed to be caused by the negligence of the Umrah pilgrimage travel agency (PPIU: Penyelenggara Perjalanan Ibadah Umrah) that organized and operated their tour. The pilgrims were left stranded in Jeddah without the planned itinerary or accommodation arrangements being made. The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenhaj) has taken this situation seriously and immediately launched an investigation into the concerned PPIU. The Ministry emphasizes that PPIUs are obligated to protect the rights of pilgrims and provide appropriate services, viewing this case as a significant deviation from these requirements. If the PPIU fails to make improvements following the investigation, the Ministry has indicated its intention to consider revoking the travel agency's license to operate Umrah tours as a strict measure. This demonstrates a firm stance to prevent similar incidents from escalating in the future. In Indonesia, Umrah pilgrimage is a significant religious act for Muslims, with many citizens preparing for it over many years. Therefore, such troubles caused by travel agency negligence place a considerable emotional and financial burden not only on the pilgrims themselves but also on their families. The government needs to strengthen its oversight of PPIUs and strive for the prevention of recurrence, ensuring that citizens can participate in religious rituals with peace of mind.
