Five Doctors Collaborate to Assist in Mid-Flight Birth on Denmark-Vietnam Flight

On Vietnam Airlines flight VN38 from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, an unexpected in-flight emergency occurred when a Vietnamese woman, 30 weeks pregnant, began experiencing labor pains. With approximately two hours remaining before landing after a 10-hour flight, the cabin crew broadcast a call for medical professionals. Five individuals responded: three Vietnamese doctors, one foreign doctor, and one foreign nurse. None were obstetricians, but they quickly organized to assist the expectant mother. Dr. Ho Khanh Thanh from Cho Ray Hospital, one of the five, stated, "In an emergency, there isn't much time to worry. I focused on ensuring the mother's safe delivery and preparing for potential risks." Utilizing available medical supplies on board, the team successfully delivered a baby weighing 1.3 kg. Recognizing the critical need for immediate neonatal care for the premature infant, and with over two hours still to fly to Vietnam, the flight crew, in consultation with the medical team, decided to divert to Yangon, Myanmar, which offered quicker access to medical facilities than Bangkok, Thailand. The aircraft landed in Yangon, where the mother and child were transferred to a local hospital before the plane continued its journey to Ho Chi Minh City. A representative from Vietnam Airlines confirmed that both mother and baby are safe and healthy. Vietnam Airlines' policy permits pregnant passengers under 32 weeks of gestation to travel, with restrictions for those 36 weeks or further along. This incident highlights the professionalism of the medical personnel and the airline's decisive action in a critical situation.
